Common Questions

Spine Conditions — Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which spine condition I have?

The pattern of your symptoms is the biggest clue — where the pain sits, whether it travels into an arm or leg, and what makes it better or worse. A clinical examination and, when needed, an MRI or X-ray confirm the exact cause before any treatment is planned.

Do all spine conditions need surgery?

No. Most spine conditions improve without surgery. Physiotherapy, medication and targeted injections help the majority of patients, and surgery is recommended only when it is genuinely the right option.

When should I see a spine specialist?

See a specialist if pain lasts more than a week or two, travels into the arm or leg, comes with numbness, tingling or weakness, or keeps returning despite rest and medicines. New weakness, walking imbalance or bladder changes should be reviewed promptly.

What tests are used to diagnose spine conditions?

Diagnosis starts with your history and a nerve examination. An MRI shows discs, nerves and the spinal canal in detail, while X-rays show alignment and bone changes. Scans are always interpreted alongside symptoms, never on their own.

Are back pain and sciatica the same thing?

Not quite. Back pain is felt in the back itself, while sciatica is nerve pain that travels from the lower back down the leg. They can occur together, and identifying which is dominant guides the right treatment.

Which spine conditions does Dr. Soma Sundar treat?

The full range — neck pain, back pain, sciatica, slipped or herniated disc, lumbar canal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, cervical spondylosis, radiculopathy and myelopathy, facet and sacroiliac joint pain, tailbone pain, scoliosis, kyphosis and osteoporotic fractures.

Can I get a second opinion before spine surgery?

Yes. Many patients come specifically for a second opinion before deciding on surgery. Your scans and reports are reviewed and you receive a clear, unbiased view of your options — including non-surgical ones.

Are video consultations available for spine problems?

Yes — useful for patients outside Chennai, NRIs and international patients. You can share your MRI and X-ray reports in advance so they are reviewed before the call.
